I did the speed thing the first time I read it.  I found out the hard way that the Silmarillion is best read a chapter at a time, with a brief "meditating" space in between of about a day or so. LOL

Or maybe it's just best read the second time when you're familiar with all the names and plots and can then find stuff you missed the first time. Razz

It really does feel more like a collection of stories and legends, rather than, say, an exhaustive history book. I need to own it- I shall be most sad when it goes back to the library. Sad
